Trailer: The Three Stooges

I am always trying to add new posts on here that aren't film reviews, because that can get boring after a while. So for a new segment, I thought to give a short review on any new trailers for upcoming films, and what better trailer to review than this trailer that was released yesterday?

Based on the mid-20th century comedy shorts, The Three Stooges is about, well, 3 stooges, who have to save their orphanage, and along the way uncover a murder plot and wind up starring in a reality TV show. It is produced, written and directed by the Farrelly brothers.

I have not watched any of the Three Stooges' shorts, but I do know of their humor style due to the large amount of times it's featured in pop-culture. It appears that the film is sticking with the original humor, as eyes get poked and Moe basically abuses Curly and Larry.

It's nice that a film (presumably) isn't going to rely on lazy swearing and cheap crude gags for it's comedy, but return to the olden years of slapstick. But the problem is slapstick is so over done that every bit of slapstick seen in the trailer is cringe-worthily bad. It also doesn't help that they go for the cheap and lazy jokes, like the iPhone gag as seen early on, the part where the characters are stunned by the hot nun and the lobster in the pants part. In fact, the only time I even smiled during this trailer was the dynamite part. I don't know why I smiled, but it felt so wrong.

The utter worst part of this trailer has to be Moe appearing in Jersey Shore in fake tan, allowing that Jersey rat Snooki to make an appearance in the film. If she doesn't get hit on the head with a giant bell, I will be disappointed.

Do yourself a favor: Just say no and avoid this film. Not Moe, stupid teaser poster, no!

But is it as bad as i'm making it out to be? Check out the trailer for yourself below, and be the judge.

The Three Stooges is released on April 4th 2012

  1. This is an insult to the good name of the Three Stooges, of which I have been a fan since childhood. Larry, Curly, and Moe would be rolling in their graves. So would Shemp too, even though he isn't even bastardized in this movie. Why do they have to make a bullshit movie when they could just re-release the shorts in theatres? As you can tell, I am very angry about this, but excellent blog nonetheless James!

  2. I have mixed feelings. The Farrelly Bros have definitely been producing crap for the last few years, however, and this probably won't be an exception. I know Jim Carrey was going to be in this at one point, and I'm pretty sure Russell freakin Crowe was rumored to be Moe once upon a time, and I can't help but wonder what the film would have ended up like when I consider those two.

    Oh well, thanks for sharing!

  3. One of them poked Snooki in the eye - that made up for all the cheesey-ness. ....
....but yeah, I think I'm probably going to give this one a miss. An eyebrow was raised....

  4. @HarleyQuinn well it looks like it's not just non-stooges fans who are hating on this, good to know

@Robert Yeah, Jim Carrey and Benecio del Toro were to star at one point, I don't know if it would've been good if they stayed on though.

@Ruth i'd have preferred if he hit her on the hid with the hammer
