February 2014 in Review

The second month in a row that i've contributed a month in review section, so it's safe to say i'm serious about this. Now I rarely watch a film in cinemas more than once, so it says quite a bit that I rewatched 2 films in cinemas this month. Not a bad month for me, finally having seen one film I've been anticipating watching, and one film I've been dreading seeing (hint: It's from the man responsible for The Last Airbender). So without further ado, here's the films I saw in February.

Teeth - 2.5/5 - A film worth watching with friends merely for the hilariously ludicrous plot. It's hard to recommend watching for anything else, due to the poor acting, laughable direction and demotion of nearly every male character into unsavory, sex-obsessed types.

21 Jump Street - 4.5/5 - My perfect example of a film I could watch over and over again without getting sick of.

The Wolf of Wall Street: Best film of the month,
Best film seen in cinemas and
Best film rewatched
Inside Llewyn Davis - 4.5/5 - The latest installment from the Coen brothers is a wonderful character study that basks within a beautiful, smoky cinematography, held aloft by a fantastic performance from Oscar Issac and contains one of the best soundtracks for any film in the past few years.

Marvel One-Shot: All Hail The King - 3/5 - A fun follow on from Iron Man 3, with Ben Kingsley obviously having a blast in reprising his role of Trevor. However, it seems that the whole reason for this short is to cowardly backtrack on the brave twist Shane Black took in Iron Man 3, as if there is no other reason for this to exist than to appease the rabid, pissed off fanbase.

Marvel One-Shot: All Hail The King:
Biggest Disappointment

Sound City - 5/5 - Dave Grohl delivers a love letter the the titular studio, never needing to play with your emotions, since you can feel the passion and sincerity pouring out through everybody who collaborates, through their stories and their memories, ending in musical collaborations which marks one of the finest cinematic moments of 2013.

The Wolf of Wall Street - 5/5 - Just as good a watch the second time around. I could've easily sat through it for ANOTHER 3 hours.

The LEGO Movie - 5/5 - The fact that I managed to see this twice in cinemas this month should be a testament to how much I loved this film.

Sound City: Biggest Surprise

After Earth - 0.5/5 - Even if M Night Shyamalan weren't involved, this feels like it merely exists as a vehicle for Jaden Smith's acting career to get off the ground, which wouldn't be so bad if he could actually act.

DC Showcase: Green Arrow - 4/5 - These DC Animated shorts have proven to be a well done way of getting acquainted with DC characters, without it being too time consuming, and this Green Arrow short proves to be the same (well, for those who don't want to get into the Arrow TV Series). While the ending wraps up a bit too neat and conveniently, you get a fun 11 minutes that's bolstered by a good voice cast and well-drawn animation.

After Earth: Worst film of the month

Ride Along - 2/5 - A film which remains a slave to the predictable plotting, and puts a bored Ice Cube front and center with Kevin Hart, who regularly switches from being a loud mouthed annoyance to the reason things (slightly) liven up.

Robocop (2014) - 2.5/5 - A remake which doesn't follow the original beat for beat, but instead delivers a tame version of an ultraviolent cult classic, resulting in an overuse of CG in action, a bland lead and a heavy handed attempt at satire.
