Room (2015)

Comes with a view

Director: Lenny Abrahamson
Running Time: 118 Minutes
Starring: Brie Larson, Jacob Tremblay, Sean Bridgers, Joan Allen

5 year old Jack (Jacob Tremblay) has lived his entire life with Ma (Brie Larson), within the confides of one windowless room.  They're the captives of a man they call Old Nick, but Ma goes out of her way to ensure Jack lives a happy and fulfilling life, without knowing the reality of their treacherous situation.

Lenny Abrahamson perfectly captures the harrowing nature of the tale, yet allows moments that are heart wrenching and uplifting to come through. The film's crafted in a way that takes unexpected paths, setting it apart from other films about captive characters. But at the heart, this is a mother and son tale, and it's effectively delivered. This is thanks to the films viewpoint being through the characters eyes, and the exceptional performances delivered by the two leads.

Jacob Tremblay is a revelation as Jack, perfectly capturing this young boy whose entire world lies within the four walls he calls "Room". Brie Larson does stunning work as Ma, who dedicates herself to shielding Jack from the reality which is their lives. To say these are some of the years best performances is but one of the praises that is much deserved.

Room is an exceptional viewing experience that won't leave the mind easily. But through the heavy scenario and tense moments, there lies what's undoubtedly a rewarding watch.
