My Rating System

This is the ratings system which I use to evaluate film, television and anything else I review on here. If the rating is 2.5 stars or below, then the item is considered to be bad.

Zero stars - Torture (Watch under own risk)
This rating is reserved for those which go special places in order to be awful. The redeeming features range from one to none, and the struggle lies in finishing the overall item. There is nothing fun or exciting about this, it is nothing more than a waste. Avoid at all costs
Examples: Prom Night, Bucky Larson: Born to be a Star, Keith Lemon: The Film, Scary Movie 5

0.5 stars - Dreadful
The subject of this rating tends to be consistently terrible, but has at least one small item that's redeeming. An example of this is an actor that manages to give off a great performance, despite not being given much to work with.
Examples: The Smurfs, The Animal, Grown Ups 2, Transformers: Age of Extinction

1 star - Painful
Films that get this may have a very faint sense of enjoyment hidden somewhere within, or even one or two good things about it. Not as terrible as lower rated items, but I still wouldn't advise watching it.
Examples: Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, Ghost Rider, Sabotage, Fantastic Four

1.5 stars - Awful
There are very few things which I actually like about this, and what few good things are eclipsed by the overall piece of awful that it was.
Examples: The Hangover: Part II, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Sex Tape, Nativity 2: Danger in the Manger

2 stars - Bad
This rating is given to films which have a number of things that I actually am positive about (e.g. CG fights, certain scenes or performances), but there are too many negative things that weigh it down, making it into something I would not recommend.
Examples: Sucker Punch, Frozen, The Raid, God Bless America

2.5 stars - Bland
This is the closest a bad film gets to being considered anything near good. Items assigned this rating will have a number of features which I consider to be on one of the many varying levels of good, but the negatives far outweigh the positives, making for something which could've been worse, but should've been better.
Examples: Dinner for Schmucks, Iron Man 2Death Proof, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

3 stars - Okay
This is the lowest rating I will give to a something I consider to not be bad. The positives will outweigh the negatives, but only by a little bit.
Examples: Cars, Daybreakers, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, Muppets Most Wanted

3.5 stars - Good
There was issues I had with it, but the overall item is good enough to recommend.
Examples: 17 Again, The Mummy, Big Bad Wolves, The Inbetweeners 2

4 stars - Great
Definitely worth watching. While it may not be one of the best things you could see, it's definitely worth your time.
Examples: Dawn of the Dead (2004), Much Ado About Nothing, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Turtle Power: the Definitive History of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

4.5 stars - Amazing
All that get this rating are near-perfect. There may be a couple of things which prevent it from getting full marks, but it is still an absolute must-see.
Examples: Falling Down, Monsters, Tucker & Dale vs Evil, Obvious Child, Lilting

5 stars - Masterpiece
This is where the magic happens. This rating is reserved for all that I believe to succeed on just about every level. There may be a few negatives I have, but they do not affect the overall Masterpiece.
Examples: Halloween, Pulp Fiction, Fruitvale Station, Nightcrawler, Birdman
